This bundle of lessons is the ultimate resource for investment appraisal and can be delivered over 2-3 lessons. We introduces learners to the three main techniques of investmen appraisal, we go through each one, with step by step, concise, clear and engaging examples before students have a go at practising the calculations. We start with payback, a few examples with answers and then students can practice, we then look at the pros and cons before going on to ARR. A good set of examples and questions for ARR, with answers popping in to see how we get to the end figure. We then go on to look at NPV with a few more examples and questions. Two kahoot quizzes with links to further consolidate knowledge of how to calculate payback, ARR and NPV. We look at what else needs to be taken into consideration when making investment decisions such as non-financial, risk, uncertainty and sensitivity analysis. We focus on Porter’s five forces by starting with a video outlining the model, then some slides to consolidate the theory on this interesting tool to analyse influences on an industry. A case study on Tesco’s buyer power is looked at before students attempt to carry out a Porter’s five forces analysis on the smartphone industry, this could be carried out as a group activity and findings presented back to class. In the second lesson, we look at a case study which we previously looked at in year 1 (3.1.3) on the gaming market, now that students have studied the external environment in thorough detail in year 2, we attempt this again. We start by looking at how financial statements can help stakeholders make decisions before going into the four categories of ratio analysis (profitability, liquidity, gearing and efficiency ratios). In the first double lesson we focus on profitability and liquidity ratios. ROCE is looked at with broken down examples before recapping the GP and NP margin from Year 1 (so ALL ratios are covered). We then look at the current ratio and although the acid test ratio is not required in the AQA spec, students do have the opportunity to understand it here as it can help with evaluation arguments e.g. stock is not a very liquid asset all the time. In the third lesson we focus on gearing, again with broken downe examples and the interpretation of the figures, finally in the last lesson we focus on efficiency ratios of payables days, receivables days and inventory turnover.
